My Letter to the Editor

In response to the Harrisburg Patriot-News editorial on homeshoring:

I was pleased to read Wednesday's editorial stating that "homeshoring" may be the answer to creating American jobs.  It is vitally important that the public becomes aware of this growing trend and starts demanding that companies homeshore more work.

I would like to clarify that homeshoring can be thought of as more than just allowing customer service representatives to work from home.  It encompasses the use of home-based employees in the performance of any service-sector process, from human resources to software engineering.

Homeshoring will help medium sized cities attract employment opportunities that have traditionally been limited to the major metropolitan areas.  For example, forward-looking companies will start to homeshore computer programming jobs to cities with reasonable costs of living because it costs less for a high-quality motivated workforce.  Furthermore, statistics have shown that homeshoring improves employee productivity and retention.  As your editorial states homeshoring is an all-around win-win proposition.
